Make Your Goal Living the Simple Life

A recent article in the New York Times “the Island where People Forget to Die” by Dan Buettner really got my attention. I am a registered dietitian and yes it is a good goal to lose weight if you need to, and to lower your cholesterol, blood sugar and triglycerides if you are on medications for these conditions. I suggest a full examination not of your body, or weight but your total lifestyle. Coincidentally I am writing this article during the recent “Franken storm”. My “normal lifestyle” has changed to a much simpler one. This situation has given me reason to pause.

This article is a must read. It identifies a man in his mid-60’s diagnosed with lung cancer and given nine months to live. He chooses to return to his ancestral roots in Ikaria Greece. What occurred was astonishing. He adopted the local ways of living and his strength started returning. The years passed and his health continued to improve. Today, at 97 years old, three decades later he is cancer-free! He never received chemo therapy, took drugs or sought therapy of any sort.

So what happens on this island that improved this man’s health? Geographically the air and water have been identified as being responsible for extending life. There have been other communities with centenarians. There are similarities within all these communities that can be helpful for all of us to heed.

The residents of this island choose to have a simple life. Their day starts late morning with a breakfast of goat’s milk, wine, sage tea or coffee with bread and honey. Lunch includes beans, potatoes, greens and whatever home grown seasonal vegetables are available. Often dinner is small with bread and honey. Meals and social times extend late into the evening sharing stories, wine and or teas. The Ikarians farm their own vegetables, raise their own animals, and enjoy drinks made from locally grown herbs. Their focus is not on monetary success, multitasking and watching the clock; instead they choose to enjoy an enormous sense of community and time for daily naps.

As an RD I counsel patients and together we create goals. My initial assessment includes information for genetics, lab values, as well as diet and exercise habits. Very often it comes to light that my patients are under stress or don’t have a social network, in addition to other weight and health issues. The Ikarians don’t seem to have these stressors and they certainly seem to enjoy socializing with a close community of friends. Could these differences make so much difference with health? Research has indicated that dementia, cardiovascular disease in addition to cancer have been delayed or totally avoided.

The Times article has brought more of my attention to the importance of “way of life”. So let’s examine this way of life that seems to be so beneficial. Our cultural ways of multitasking, rushing and watching the clock are not included in Ikarian residents thought processes. Focus on taking naps, enjoying the social aspect of eating and having a lifestyle that naturally includes being active as opposed to gym time seem to reap impressive health advantages. Everyday life includes daily walking, gardening, and heavy manual labor. Another topic that I found extremely relevant was not particularly what these residents eat but what they do not eat such as sugar and soda. Their diets are based on the Mediterrean diet, a plant based format for Ikarians consisting of goats milk, wine, teas, coffee, whole grains, honey, beans, and home grown vegetables. The Mediterrean diet emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. This diet includes moderate amounts of alcohol but limited dairy and meat products.

Low intake of saturated fat is associated with lower risk of heart disease and olive oil has been found to reduce bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol. Tryptophan found in nuts, seeds, legumes, soybeans and other soy products, tuna, shellfish and turkey is one of ten essential amino acids. The body uses tryptophan to synthesize serotonin which is helpful in regulating appetite, as well as elevating moods and increasing the ability to enjoy beneficial sleep. Coffee, also included in Ikarian diets, has been controversial but of late research credits it with lower rates of diabetes, and heart disease. Basically to summarize, the additional benefits of the Ikarian diet include fewer pesticides, more foods in their natural form and choices that are loaded with beneficial vitamins and minerals. There is no mention of packaged and processed foods or beverages.

This wonderful article really got my attention. It ended by the cancer victim showing no further signs of cancer, and returning to the US to ask his doctors if they could explain what happened. When the interviewer asked “What happened?”this former cancer victim replied “My doctors were all dead.”

Up to 65% of the adult human body is made up of water. We use water to clean our bodies, clothes, and dishes. We gulp water down after a hard workout. We need water to survive.

The UN suggests that we each need 20-50 litres of water a day to use for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. In a world of over 7 billion people, conserving water is essential. But how can we do so on a daily basis, in our own homes?

While there are many ways to limit the waste of water, the following are the top 10 most effective ways to stop wasting and start saving this precious resource:

1. Wash right: When washing your dishes, brushing your teeth, or even taking a shower, dont allow the water to run more than necessary. During dishwashing, fill one sink with soapy water and one with rinse water, and dip dishes from one to the other. If you have only one sink, fill two small plastic containers with soapy and rinse water and do the same. When brushing your teeth, wet your brush and turn off the faucet while you scrub.

Many people enjoy taking long, hot showers. Start cutting back by shaving five minutes off your shower time or installing a water-conserving shower head. If you feel the need to luxuriate, run a bath and sit as long as you like.

2. Run washers less: Purchase a larger laundry basket and wait until you have a full load before running the washing machine. Do the same for dishes, making sure to fill the dishwasher completely before turning it on. Doing so could save you up to 1000 gallons per month.

3. Collect and reuse water: No need to swap one healthy practice for another. When washing fruits and vegetables, consider pooling the water in a bowl and using it to water houseplants.

4. Watering right: If the shower is leaking, we are apt to notice. However, outdoor faucets and sprinklers are more likely to have leaks that go unnoticed. Be sure to give all of your water hookups a once, twice, and even thrice-over to check for places where water may be escaping.

5. Adjust your dishwasher setting: Dishwashers are great timesavers, but dont disregard the settings that can help you save water while getting your cutlery sparkling clean. Check for an eco water saving mode and use it every time. Bonus: turn off the dryer setting for energy savings.

6. Reuse linens: Good hygiene is a must, but usually there is no need to wash your towels every day. Try using one towel for a week. Extend the life of your sheets by washing the pillowcases weekly and saving the rest of the set for big, twice-monthly washes.

7. Wash the car well: Think your hose is efficient? You can easily use up 60 gallons of water or more in five minutes of outdoor car wash fun (not including the spray-your-kids-when-they-arent- looking moments). Keep your vehicle sparkly and save water by using the WaterSavers program, popular with professional car washes, which uses 40 gallons or less per car and gives clean water back to Mother Earth.

8. Concentrate on cleaning: Using concentrated cleaning formulas not only gives you more cleaner for less, but uses less packaging and less production energy. This is a great example of convenience and water conservation combining forces, and you can take full advantage.

9. Keep cold water in a pitcher: Instead of running your tap water until it gets cold, chilling water in a pitcher allows you to keep water cold and ready, minus the waste.

10. Collect rainwater: Nature provides ample water for gardening purposes just by raining. By putting a barrel below your gutter, you can collect generous stores (more than half a gallon of water for every square foot of roof during a rainfall of one-inch) and use to grow those squash and tomato plants.

Keep Your Food Safe From Deadly Pesticides and Herbicides By Growing Hydroponic Vegetables At Home

Hydroponics is a great, fun and clean way to grow plants indoors by supplying water, nutrients, and oxygen to their roots. These soilless mediums work best because they are pH neutral and provide plenty of support for plants. They retain moisture, and allow for good air circulation.

pH is one of the most disregarded aspects of gardening, pH is very important in hydroponics gardening. pH is measured on a scale of 1-14 with 7 being “neutral”. Anything lower than 7 is acidic and anything above 7 is alkaline (bases). All plants require a certain pH level in order to produce optimum results. The pH level will vary from plant to plant, but in general the majority prefer a slightly acidic level (between 6.0 – 6.5), though most plants can still tolerate an environment with a pH of between 5.0 and 7.5. The preferred method of checking and adjusting pH levels is to use a pH meter. pH adjustments can be made by simply adding a small amount of pH up or pH down solution to your reservoir.

Starting your garden out by planting seeds can be one of the most enjoyable parts of gardening. Seedlings dont require as an intense amount of light as does a more mature plant. You will want to use a florescent light about 2 above the top of your seedlings. Too much intense light and heat will burn them up and kill them. You will need a propagation tray and humidity dome. Use these to keep your medium and seeds in the perfect environment.

The preferred method for growing vegetables, flowers and herbs year round is with HID lighting, it stands for High Intensity Discharge Lighting, which is a special type of lighting that is much more intense than any other grow lights. Decide what size of light to use. First you need to figure out the square footage of your indoor garden. To do this you will need to measure the space. This is how to find the square footage of your grow space. (Width x Length= Square Feet) Example: if you want your indoor garden to be in your closet which is 3×4, you will find this room to be 12sq.ft. (You will also want the height of your room to be at least 4 above the canopy of your plants.) For most grow operations an 8-10 foot ceiling will work fine. This will allow you to keep your lamp at least a minimum of 18 above the top of your plants. (HID lights get hot and can burn the tops of your plants.) Next you will need to know how many watts/square foot of light your plants will require. For Example, tomatoes need to attain around 40-50 watts per square foot for optimal growth. You then would take 50 watts x 12sq. ft. = 600 watts. This means that you will need a 600watt light to maintain your plants optimal growth in this particular garden. (Plants wattage needs x Square Feet = HID light requirement.)
